The UK’s obsession with FAT: Is fat really the enemy?
Matt discusses the myths surrounding carbohydrates and body fat, by Matt Kay

One of the first assumptions people make when trying to lose weight is that they need to reduce their fat intake and eat more fruit and vegetables (carb’s). The UK supermarket shelves have more ‘fat free’ foods than ever before yet the UK population is fatter than ever before. In fact there is a direct correlation between the fat free movement and weight gain. In this short article I am going to reveal how reducing fats and proteins and increasing carbohydrates is actually the most effective way to put body fat on, NOT off.
Each year we eat 160 Lbs of Sugar!
How?
The standard nutritional model would have us reducing fat and protein and increase carbohydrate intake. If you follow a 1,800 calorie diet that is 60%+ carbohydrates – the one most weight loss programmes advocate - your body will have to contend with 2 cups of sugar per day. Given this increase in daily sugar consumption is it any wonder that we consume on average 160 pounds of sugar per person each year. And if we recognise that sugar is “bad for you” is it any wonder that the increase in diabetes, heart disease, strokes and obesity is at an all time high in the U.K.
How does this affect weight gain?
Many people successfully lose weight in the short term with a high carbohydrate and calorie restrictive diet. However, 96% of these people can’t keep the weight off. Eating so much sugar plays havoc with your blood sugar levels and can send you on a sugar craving, energy roller coaster throughout the day. When your body is in this state it starts to store more of your food as fat and increases you chances of suffering diabetes.
How to lose weight and keep it off:
Other than following born2move's Primal Health Programme there are 3 effective and fundamental nutrition principles you have to follow to build the foundations for sustained weight loss. Firstly, eat a balance of carbohydrates (40%), proteins (40%), fats (20%) at every meal. Secondly, eat regular meals/snacks throughout the day, never leaving more than 3 hours between meals. Thirdly, eat 80% of your calories before 4pm (eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a price and dinner like a poorper).
